What UKSolars is, and what it is not

Independent UK solar guidance on costs, grants and export rates, with sources and review dates.

Not a government service. UKSolars is an independent company. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting on behalf of the UK Government, DESNZ, Ofgem, MCS or any local authority. We do not administer any grant scheme, we cannot approve an application, and we never charge for anything a government provides free.

How we are paid. We are paid a fee by installers when we introduce a homeowner who asks for a quote. It does not change your price, and we are not paid more by one installer than another for the same job. In full.

Why this site exists

UK solar funding moved four times in eight months. ECO4 was extended to the end of 2026, the Great British Insulation Scheme closed, the Warm Homes Plan was published, and plug-in solar was legalised. Across all four, the pages ranking on Google contradict each other and almost none of them carry a date.

That is not because the people who wrote them are dishonest. It is because keeping a page correct is unglamorous, unbudgeted work that nobody's content calendar rewards. This site is an attempt to do exactly that work and nothing cleverer: publish the number, publish where it came from, publish when someone last checked, and correct it the day it moves.

What we do

  • Publish guidance on UK solar costs, grants, export rates and batteries, with a primary source and a date attached to every regulated fact.
  • Build free tools that run in your browser and ask for nothing.
  • Introduce homeowners who want quotes to MCS-certified installers, and take a fee from the installer for it.

What we do not do

  • We do not install anything, and we have no financial interest in any installer.
  • We do not administer, approve or process any grant application, and we are not connected to any government department, Ofgem, MCS or any council.
  • We do not broker finance. Introducing you to a lender for a fee is a regulated activity and we are not authorised for it — installers arrange their own finance under their own permissions.
  • We do not sell shared leads to five buyers, which is the practice behind most complaints about solar quote sites.

Who writes it

No individual author or reviewer is named yet, and we are not going to invent one. Content on this site currently carries an organisational byline, which is a weaker trust signal than a named expert — and a considerably stronger one than a fabricated expert, which is the alternative you will find on some competing sites.

We are recruiting an MCS-certified installer or a certified retrofit coordinator to review the technical and funding pages under their own name and registration number. Until that person exists, this paragraph stays here.

What that means for you right now

Treat this site as well-sourced research rather than as expert advice. Every figure links to where it came from precisely so you can check it yourself, which matters more while nobody's professional registration is attached to it.

What is still unfinished

Rather than describe the site as complete, here is what is genuinely outstanding:

  • ICO registration

    The site is a data controller the moment it captures a lead. Register and pay the data protection fee, then set ICO_REGISTRATION in src/lib/compliance.ts.

  • Named lead buyers

    Consent must name who receives the data. Add entries to BUYERS in src/lib/compliance.ts; until then the enquiry endpoint rejects lead submissions.

  • Data-sharing agreement per buyer

    Each buyer is a controller in their own right. A signed DPA setting out purpose, retention, TPS screening and the ban on onward sale is required before the first lead is sent.

  • Durable consent storage

    Submissions are currently written to the Worker log only, which is not a consent record — logs expire. Wire durable storage (KV, D1 or a CRM) before capture goes live.
