Living with panels

Solar panels and moving house

Short answer

Establish who owns the panels and give the conveyancer every installation, electrical, network, warranty, finance and payment document. FIT registrations, SEG contracts and roof leases have their own transfer or closure processes. Contact the relevant provider early and record meter readings when responsibility changes.

Start early. Give the conveyancer the installation certificate, electrical and network paperwork, warranties, finance documents and details of any FIT, SEG or roof lease.

If you are selling

Confirm whether the panels are owned, financed or owned by a third party. Tell the payment provider about the move and ask for its transfer process. Record meter readings on completion.

If you are buying

Ask who owns the equipment, what paperwork is missing and whether a lease grants roof rights to another company. Ofgem says a new owner of an MCS-FIT installation should contact its FIT licensee to update the generator details.

Do not assume an export account follows the property

The buyer should establish their payment position with the provider and retain confirmation.
