Living with panels

Solar panels and home insurance

Short answer

Tell your insurer before installation and ask for written confirmation of cover. Policies differ on panels, batteries, roof damage and removal or refitting after a claim. Also check responsibility during installation and any separate obligations where the equipment is financed, leased or owned by another company.

Insurers and policies differ, so notify the insurer before work and ask for confirmation in writing. Do not rely on a general statement that panels are normally covered.

Ask whether the policy covers panels, storm or accidental damage, theft, roof damage, removal and refitting after a roof claim, and battery equipment. Confirm whether rebuilding cost or declared details need updating.

Retain the quotation, certificates, roof survey, photographs, warranties and insurer reply. If the equipment is leased or third-party owned, check that owner’s obligations too.

Installation damage is a separate question

Ask who is responsible during the work and what insurance the installer carries.
