Applying for the Smart Export Guarantee
Not a government service. UKSolars is an independent company. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting on behalf of the UK Government, DESNZ, Ofgem, MCS or any local authority. We do not administer any grant scheme, we cannot approve an application, and we never charge for anything a government provides free.
How we are paid. We are paid a fee by installers when we introduce a homeowner who asks for a quote. It does not change your price, and we are not paid more by one installer than another for the same job. In full.
Short answer
Apply directly to a Smart Export Guarantee licensee. Ofgem says eligible generation must be metered and the installation must meet the scheme’s certification requirements. Suppliers set their own application evidence and tariff terms, so check the chosen supplier’s current list before sending documents.
- Apply to
- A SEG licensee
- Payment basis
- Metered export
- Supplier choice
- Can differ from import supplier
- Check first
- Current tariff eligibility
Before applying
Choose a tariff by its complete conditions, not only the headline rate. Check whether it is tied to an import tariff, installation provider or battery, whether the rate is fixed or variable, and how readings and payments work.
Have these items ready where the supplier requests them:
- installation certification or accepted equivalent;
- network-connection paperwork;
- the electricity-supply MPAN and any export MPAN already issued;
- meter details and opening export reading; and
- proof that you are entitled to receive the export payment.
Requirements can differ, so the supplier’s current application page is the final checklist.
The application sequence
- Compare current SEG rates and conditions.
- Read the selected tariff’s eligibility and terms.
- Submit the supplier’s application with complete evidence.
- Respond if the supplier needs an export MPAN or meter work.
- Keep the acceptance date, opening reading and contract.
Do not count export income before acceptance
An installed system and a submitted application do not by themselves confirm when payments start. Use the date and terms in the supplier’s acceptance documents.
