Plug-in solar in the UK: rules and safety

Plug-in solar became lawful in Great Britain on 27 August 2026 under SI 2026/848 — capped at 800 VA, solar only, and only for devices listed on the ENA Type Test Register.

The four conditions, in one place

800 VA, 3.5 A. Measured at the inverter output. The panels themselves may total up to 2,000 W of DC output: more panel than inverter is allowed, and in UK light it is the better design.

Solar only. The specification does not apply to battery systems or to solar devices integrated with them, which excludes a large share of what is currently sold in the UK.

On the ENA Type Test Register. Manufacturers must type test to G98 and register the device before placing it on the market. A device merely submitted for registration does not count.

G98 notification. Required on connection and disconnection, and one device per household until G98 is amended.

The check that matters is the register, not the packaging. Ask a seller whether the device is listed on the ENA Type Test Register: it is a verifiable question, unlike a certificate you cannot interpret. There is no consumer-facing "kit certificate" in this scheme, so anyone offering one is describing something that does not exist.

Compared with a real installation

An 800 VA kit and a 4kWp roof array are not the same product by a factor of five.

Common questions

Is plug-in solar legal in the UK now?
In Great Britain, yes: from 27 August 2026 under SI 2026/848, subject to four conditions: a maximum of 800 VA apparent power, solar only with battery systems excluded, the device listed on the ENA Type Test Register, and G98 notification to your network operator. A kit missing any one of those is not covered.
Can I just buy one of the kits already on sale?
Check two things. First, whether it contains a battery: the specification does not apply to battery systems or to solar devices integrated with them, which excludes a good deal of what UK retail stocks. Second, whether the device is on the ENA Type Test Register, which manufacturers must complete before placing a product on the market.
Do I need to tell anyone?
Yes. G98 notification to your Distribution Network Operator is required on connection and again on disconnection. The specification permits one device per household final ring circuit, but G98 Issue 2 Amendment 1 2026 currently restricts it to one per household. Notification is after the fact rather than an application, but skipping it is not an option.
Is it worth it compared with proper panels?
If you own a suitable roof, no: an 800 VA kit generates roughly 650–800 kWh a year against 3,400–4,200 kWh from a typical 4kWp array. If you rent, live in a flat, or cannot drill into your roof, a plug-in kit is the only option that exists, and comparing it to something you cannot have is not useful.
