Common questions

How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
A typical 4.4kWp system — about ten panels — runs roughly £6,000 to £7,800 installed, and the UK average job value across all sizes is around £7,279. What moves the number most is scaffolding, whether your consumer unit needs replacing, and roof access. The full breakdown, including the costs usually left off a quote.
Do solar panels work in the UK climate?
Yes. Panels respond to daylight rather than heat, and the UK gets enough of it for a well-oriented 4kWp array to generate roughly 3,400–4,200 kWh a year. Output is strongly seasonal — the winter months produce a small fraction of the summer months — which is why self-consumption and export rates matter more here than raw generation.
How long do solar panels take to pay for themselves?
Many UK estimates fall between 8 and 16 years. The result depends on installation cost, generation, electricity use and tariffs. Self-consuming solar is usually worth more than exporting it, so households with higher daytime use often see faster payback.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not. Most domestic roof-mounted solar in England is permitted development, subject to limits on how far it projects and where it sits. Listed buildings, conservation areas and flats are the main exceptions, and getting that wrong is expensive.
How do I avoid being ripped off?
Get three written quotes, never sign on the doorstep, and check the installer on the MCS register and with RECC, HIES or TrustMark before you pay a deposit. High-pressure "today only" discounts are the clearest single warning sign in this industry. The full list of red flags.
